An aquifer is a layer or layered sequence of rocks or sediments that contain water and has a higher permeability. They will thus supply sufficient groundwater to be exploited economically. Good aquifers contain sands, gravel, fractured sandstones and solutionally weathered limestone. An aquitard describes a formation that contains water but has a lower permeability than an aquifer. The yield of groundwater that they supply is not sufficient for well construction. Examples are fluvial and glacial-fluvial silts and sandy clays, sedimentary rocks with few fractures and fractured crystalline rocks. The term aquiclude stands for saturated geological unit that is impermeable. This unit acts as a barrier to regional groundwater flow. Good aquicludes are clay, shales and metamorphic rocks (Hiscock, 2005). There are absolute boundaries that describes whether a unit is an aquifer or aquitard. The terms are site specific that is in one region a unit is considered as an aquitard while in other it may serve as an aquifer(Domenico & Schwartz, 1998).
Aquifer are further subdivided into confined and unconfined aquifers. Examples of both aquifers are shown in figure 4.1. an unconfined aquifer is arock unit with high permeability which exists continuously from surface to certain depth . the upper boundary is formed by the water table and the pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure. When an aquifer of high permeability is limited by two low permeability units, aquitards or aquicludes it is called a semi confined aquifer. Aquitards are referred to as semi confining layers while aquicludes are confining layers. The water present in this aquifer is in many cases under pressure. The water table in semi confined aquifer can be higher or lower than the water table in unconfined aquifer overlying them (Domenico & Schwartz, 1998). There is a distinction between confined and semi confined aquifer basing on the type of the confining layer. A fully confined aquifer has impermeable boundaries(aquicludes), while a semi confined aquifer is bounded by low permeable units. The term impermeable is in fact more theoretically, since no layer is fully impermeable. Therefore a semi confined aquifer is more common
